An earthquake struck the city of Hama in central Syria on Monday evening. The website “emsc-csem”, which specializes in monitoring earthquakes and tremors, reported that the magnitude of the earthquake was 5.5 on the Richter scale.
The official Syrian news agency (SANA) said that the epicenter of the earthquake was near the city of Hama, and the agency indicated that the epicenter of the tremor is located 23 kilometers east of the city of Hama.
The head of the Syrian National Earthquake Center, Raed Ahmed, said: “An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale east of Hama city at 11:56.”
The Jordanian Seismological Observatory announced the recording of an earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale, according to what was reported by Al-Mamlaka TV.
The observatory said in a statement that an earthquake was recorded on Monday at 11:55:56 pm Amman time, with its epicenter in Hama, northern Syria, with a magnitude of 5.4 and a depth of 10 kilometers.
In Lebanon, the official news agency said that some residents of Beirut, Al-Matn, and several areas in the north, all the way to Hermel, felt a light earthquake. The center added that the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers.
The quake was felt across Syria, and some residents of Damascus took to the streets, fearing new aftershocks. People in the city said the quake brought back memories of last year’s deadly earthquake that killed thousands in northern Syria and neighboring Turkey.
The tremor was also felt by residents of the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and Al-Matn, as well as several areas in the north, all the way to Hermel, according to the Lebanese newspaper An-Nahar.
