With a focal depth of 25 km, the earthquake was produced by the interaction of the Cocos and Caribe plates in the Mesoamerican Trench area of the Pacific Ocean, the Seismological Center specified.

The relief agencies of Guatemala and El Salvador did not report emergencies due to the telluric movement.

The Central American region registers high seismicity due to being located in the Pacific Ring of Fire, as well as due to the activity of its volcanic chain.
