At least one hundred people died after an earthquake hit northwest China in the early hours of Monday to Tuesday (19), reported the official Xinhua news agency.

The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of the surface, in Gansu province, where significant damage was recorded, including the collapse of houses, according to the Chinese agency.

The earthquake, of magnitude 5.9, occurred at 12:59 pm (Brasília time), at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The USGS had initially mentioned magnitude 6.

The quake’s epicenter was located 100 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Lanzhou, and was followed by several aftershocks.

Parts of Gansu province and neighboring Qinghai province were affected, according to Xinhua, and many residents rushed into the streets.

Earthquakes are common in China. In August, a 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook the east of the country, leaving more than 20 people injured and causing the collapse of dozens of buildings.
