Five Americans were among seven people killed when a safari helicopter crashed in a remote area of northern Kenya’s Samburu County on Wednesday. The flight, operated by Lady Lori Kenya and carrying guests of luxury tour agency &Beyond, went down in the rugged foothills of Mount Ololokwe at 9:13 a.m.
A routine charter flight intended to ferry guests across northern Kenya ended in tragedy on Wednesday morning. The Eurocopter EC130 B4, operated by local firm Lady Lori Kenya, departed from the Loisaba Conservancy—or Suyian Conservancy, according to initial operator accounts—bound for the Ewaso Nyiro area in Samburu County. At 9:13 a.m. local time, the aircraft crashed in the rugged foothills of Mount Ololokwe, a popular destination in the region according to local police and aviation officials.
Fatalities Confirmed as U.S. Citizens and International Leaders
David Nkoroi, the police commander for Samburu, confirmed to reporters late Wednesday that all seven people on board had died—consisting of six passengers and the pilot. In Washington, the State Department confirmed that five of those killed were U.S. citizens, though authorities initially withheld individual identities while notifications were made.
As details emerged through the day, employers and foreign governments began identifying the victims. Among the dead was José Alberto Suárez, a 55-year-old media executive who served as president and general manager of Telemundo stations including Telemundo 31, Telemundo 49, and Telemundo Fort Myers–Naples with more than 25 years of experience in the media. Suárez had spent nearly two decades with NBCUniversal and Telemundo.

Ecuador’s government also suffered a devastating loss in the crash. The country’s National Assembly and transport minister confirmed that Michele Sensi-Contugi Ycaza, director general of Ecuador’s national intelligence center, and his wife, Stephany Hollihan Vásconez, died aboard the aircraft alongside the other passengers and the pilot.
Rescue and Recovery Hampered by Terrain and Fire
The crash site presented immediate logistical hurdles for emergency responders. The Kenya Red Cross stated that its rescue teams faced severe delays reaching the wreckage due to difficult terrain access and an active fire at the crash site. An additional crew was dispatched from Isiolo to reinforce the multi-agency rescue operation.
Local safari operators mobilized to assist authorities in the remote foothills. Tropic Air Kenya dispatched two of its helicopters to aid search and rescue efforts. Meanwhile, luxury tour agency &Beyond confirmed that its guests were traveling aboard the chartered aircraft, and Lady Lori Kenya stated it was fully cooperating with the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority investigation.

The tragedy highlights ongoing safety questions regarding domestic air transit in East Africa’s booming tourism sector. However, fatal aviation incidents have occurred with regularity in recent years as domestic carriers log heavy flight hours across challenging landscapes. In February, a Kenyan legislator was among six people killed in a helicopter crash in the western part of the country.

Diplomatic channels swung into action immediately following confirmation of the U.S. casualties. The State Department stated that the U.S. Embassy is in touch with local authorities and is providing consular assistance to the families affected.
