You really have to see these special natural phenomena once in real life.
1 Mammatus clouds
Mammatus clouds are some of the most unusual and distinctive cloud formations you will encounter. The word ‘mammatus’ comes from the Latin ‘mamma’, meaning ‘udder’ or ‘breast’. In fact, it is a series of bulges or pouches that emerge from the base of the cloud.
They often occur in conjunction with Cumuloniumbus clouds, which cause unstable air and thunderstorms due to their sheer mass. Provided the air is cold enough, Mammatus clouds are prone to hail, heavy rain and lightning. In winter they can provide snow.
The striking appearance of Mammatus clouds is best seen when the sun is low in the sky and the pouches are framed by the sunlight. Much to the fascination of meteorologists and photographers.
2. Fairy Circles
There is a special natural phenomenon in Namibia: in the desert you will find vegetationless circles with a diameter of up to 12 meters. Numerous legends try to explain the phenomenon. For example, they would be footsteps of the gods. Scientists are still not sure how the mysterious circles without vegetation come about. Does it have to do with termites, who want to keep their nest plant-free, or with plants that compete for water? The so-called fairy circles can also be found in Pilbara, Australia.
3. Richat structure
The Richat structure or Guelb el-Ricchat is also nicknamed ‘The blue eye of Africa’. The circular structure can be found in Mauritania and has a diameter of up to 50 km! As a result, the structure can only be clearly seen from space. It is unclear how the unusual structure came about. Possible explanations are a meteorite impact or erosion.
4. The Wave, Coyotte Buttes
This unique rock landscape, with a petrified gulf in the center, can be found in the far north of Arizona, the United States. The wave is characterized by its grooved walls. The rock consists of sandstone and has beautiful red, pink and yellow colors.
5. Marble Caves
The marble caves in Chile almost look fake. The caves contain 5000 tons of marble! The incoming rays of the sun illuminate the cave, causing the water to reflect the beautiful blue color of the marble. The whole thing seems magical. You can only visit the caves by boat from Puerto Rio Tranquilo, but it is definitely worth it.
Earth Day is all about sustainability. Flying around the world is unfortunately anything but sustainable. Fortunately, there are also plenty of pearls to be found closer to home. In the video below you can see the 6 most beautiful beaches in Europe.
