/ The US Army announced, on Thursday, the death of 5 Marines in a fighter jet crash near San Diego.

The US military had previously announced that one of its F-16 fighter jets had crashed last Wednesday in the waters off the western coast of South Korea, noting that the pilot had managed to survive after successfully jumping out of the plane.

The US military said in a statement that “an F-16 Fighting Falcon from the 8th Fighter Wing experienced an emergency while flying over the sea. The pilot was able to eject safely and was recovered and transported to a medical facility for evaluation.”

The statement praised the close cooperation with South Korea during the rescue operation, noting that no information regarding the plane crash would be disclosed until the investigations were completed.

Washington is Seoul’s most important security ally, and has about 28,500 troops in South Korea to help protect it from North Korea.
