A 5-year-old girl was brutally attacked by a dog while walking with her mother in a park in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States, on February 7. The accident happened after the girl was invited to pet and play with the animal by the owner herself.

“My daughter went to pet the dog when, out of nowhere, he turned and bit her in the face,” said Florian Becker, the child’s father, in an interview with WSVN 7 News.

He says that, after the attack, the mother, Amanda Chalfant, tried to pull the animal by the collar, but that it broke and the dog attacked the girl again even more violently than the first time. Amanda used all her strength to separate the animal from her daughter, with the help of the owner.

When he finally pulled her apart, her face was covered in blood and bruises, so she was rushed to the nearest hospital, where she had to receive 50 stitches on her face.

The animal did not have its breed revealed, but authorities took it to the Broward County Division of Animal Care. It was only informed that he weighs 30 kg and is 6 years old.

Becker said the bruises and swelling are subsiding and there are no signs of infection. But he reiterates that it is still too early to know if there was damage to any facial nerves and especially the trauma that the situation represented for his daughter.
