LIAONING, China – A five-year orthodontic treatment took a shocking turn for a 20-year-old woman in China, resulting in eight of her teeth developing severe decay and needing root canal therapy.
The case highlights critical oral hygiene practices for those undergoing dental correction.
Key takeaways:
- Inadequate oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment can lead to severe tooth decay.
- Brushing three times daily and using specialized tools are crucial for patients with braces.
- Thorough self-management is essential for the success of orthodontic treatments.
The young woman, who lives in Liaoning province, began her orthodontic journey in August 2020. The initial treatment cost approximately 9,000 yuan (about $1,230 USD).
By her third year of treatment, she noticed black spots appearing on her teeth. Her dentist reportedly advised waiting until the orthodontic devices were removed to address the issues collaboratively. During this period, her teeth shifted, and the nerves in her front teeth became exposed.
Seeking a second opinion, the woman switched dentists in 2023. Within three months, her condition improved considerably. however, upon removal of her orthodontic devices after five years of treatment, she discovered that eight teeth had suffered serious decay.
“I diligently cared for my teeth, brushing twice daily and rinsing with water or mouthwash after meals,” she stated.
The Challenge of Braces and Oral Care
Experts emphasize that orthodontic appliances create numerous nooks and crannies on teeth. Thes areas can easily trap food particles, fostering bacterial growth and accelerating tooth decay if not meticulously cleaned.
What’s the best way to clean teeth with braces? Experts recommend brushing at least three times a day, especially after meals. Using specialized tools like orthodontic toothbrushes, interdental brushes, and oral irrigators is crucial to thoroughly clean around the braces and along the gum line.
The situation underscores the importance of vigilant oral hygiene. “Poor oral hygiene management has led to teenagers having to halt their orthodontic treatment,” one expert noted. “rigorous self-care is fundamental to achieving successful results.”
Did you know? Thorough cleaning involves angling the toothbrush and brushing back and forth at the points where the orthodontic device attaches to the teeth.
To prevent such complications, experts advise using fluoride toothpaste and undergoing regular fluoride treatments. Limiting sugary and carbonated drinks, as well as sticky foods, is also recommended.
