(ANSA) – FLORENCE, 09 APR – Fifty associations and committees ask for clarification in a letter to the Tuscany Region on the presence of PFAS chemicals in water based on a Greenpeace report. “We are concerned and surprised because, 10 days after the release of the Greenpeace report on the presence of Pfas in surface waters, into which purified wastewater from the tanning, paper and textile districts is discharged, as well as the affected area from the horticultural activities between Pistoia and Prato, the Tuscan regional administration hides in a disconcerting silence”, we read in the text which defines the “embarrassing and worrying situation also in light of what emerged from a journalistic investigation by Rai in ‘Presa Diretta ‘”. In fact, say the 50 associations, “while in our region and above all in the communities directly affected by the use of these products in industrial and production processes, there is discussion and questioning; even some municipal councils have started to produce agendas in which it is requested , to the competent bodies and managers of water and industrial purification services, to produce analytical data capable of confirming or denying what has been documented by the “self-produced” analyzes by Greenpeace, “we ask ourselves what the regional administration is doing”.
“We believe that without causing unnecessary alarmism, after the Keu scandal, we cannot rest on our laurels – they continue -.
We are convinced that the vast majority of those who live in Tuscany want to understand whether or not we are in the midst of a new environmental and health emergency, we would like to know before uniting or dividing ourselves on what to do to change course, we are aware that it will not be possible to solve the problem without outlawing the production and use of these non-degradable chemical compounds.”
The 50 committees ask that with respect to the European and national authorities it is “appropriate for Tuscany to make an autonomous decision that aligns with what has already been done by the Piedmont and Veneto regions on the matter” and that “all analytical information, both current and future ones, of Arpat, ASL, of the companies managing the integrated water service and industrial purification”.
Among the first signatories of the document, the Tuscan Forum Movimenti per l’Acqua Tuscan Environmentalist Forum, Association for Citizens’ Rights, Montalbano Biodistrict Association, Acqua bene Comune Pistoia Valdinievole, Alliance for common goods Pistoia and dozens of other acronyms.
