Passalacqua, historic residence on Lake Comoin a 1787 building on land that belonged to Innocent
The list includes hotels from 35 different cities on six continents and represents 50 Best’s first foray into the travel sector – not without an eye on restaurants – after its venture into the world’s cocktail bars. Passalacqua, the luxury boutique hotel on the shores of the lake already sung by Manzoni, inaugurated in June 2022 stands out. It’s housed in the 18th-century villa with spectacular terraced gardens that slope down to the water, where the De Santis family has created a 24-room gem with the feel of a private home.
In second place is the imposing Rosewood Hong Kong, located in the city’s Victoria Dockside arts and design district, with stunning harbor views. And to the third the Four Seasons Bangkok at Chao Phraya River.
Tim Brooke-Webb, CEO of The World’s 50 Best Hotels, comments: “Huge congratulations to Passalacqua for managing to get to number one, just two years after opening. It is a true testament to the vision of the De Santis family, who created this sublime guest sanctuary with scrupulous dedication to design detail, exquisite hospitality and distinctive magic, which has clearly left a lasting impression on our Academy of expert voters.”
An important message from the hotel business that is reborn after the devastating impact of Covid.
Four Seasons
Italy is also doing well in the rest of the Peninsula, well represented from North to South: here is the Four Seasons of Florence, within the largest private garden in the city, defined in the ranking as “an oasis of quiet Italian luxury”. Just walk through the doors of the renovated 15th century Medici palace to be greeted by large floral displays and frescoes, before being escorted into one of its 116 bedrooms adorned with antique furniture, with the added bonus of a large gourmet kitchen designed by Paolo Lavezzini.
Love Venice
We go to Venice with position number 14: Aman in the city of canals it is loved, as well as for its enviable position, it is defined by the list as a “masterpiece of the Aman Group in seductive opulence and refined understatement, accentuated by aristocratic Italian touches”. The reference is obviously also to the works of art that embellish the frescoed ceilings.
Le Sirenuse Positano
Again, at no. 20. on the hills of the “technicolor area of Positano”, the hotel opens The Sirenuse: this former family summer home became a hotel in 1951 when the four owners brothers made it a monument to Neapolitan hospitality. Each generation has refined its offering, perfecting its all-white, ceramic-filled luxury to fit its million-dollar vision.
Borgo Egnazia in Savelletri
We go to Puglia with Borgo Egnazia, at no. 21. Hotel famous for being chosen by international stars (including Madonna) is a real all-white village nestled in the countryside. Inaugurated in 2009, Borgo Egnazia “has created an imaginary Mediterranean wonderland” (we read in the motivation) with all the beauty and splendor of an ancient village and all the comforts of contemporary international hotelery, including Domingo’s starred cuisine Schingaro.
Not just an Italy in great shape, but an entire continent: Europe it is in fact the one with the highest number of addresses in the ranking, well twentyone, followed by Asia which places eighteen (including two on the podium) and North America with six. Africa has three, Oceania and South America have to settle for one each.
Italy confirms itself, as already happens in the ranking of the best restaurants, as a country that expresses great performances in the provinces, in small towns, in the countryside, unlike international addresses, which are mostly found in large cities or famous tourist centers . Even the hotel chainsFurthermore, they have a great weight, if you think of names like Aman or Four Seasons which boast several hotels in different locations.
There were also special mentionsi.e. awards to also highlight those hotels that have stood out for particular characteristics, including the award “Eco Hotel” promoted sa Flor de Caña for ecological sensitivity awarded to Singita Lodges in South Africa after an audit by the Sustainable Restaurant Association; Carlo Alberto “Best Boutique Hotel” awarded to The Newt in Somerset; The “Best Beach Hotel” sponsored by Lost Explorer, awarded to Soneva Fushi in the Maldives as the best beach hotel destination and the One To Watch Award awarded by Lavazza to The Lodge at Blue Sky, Auberge Resorts Collection – located in the Wasatch Mountain Range in the state of Utah – the latter title assigned to a hotel that is currently outside the prestigious list, but which the 50 Best team believes has the potential to enter the rankings in future editions.
The list is created from votes from the World’s 50 Best Hotels Academy, which includes 580 expert international globetrotters. The Academy is divided into nine areas of the world, each of which has a president. Every year the jury will be renewed by at least 25% and all voters, apart from the presidents of the Academy, remain anonymous to eliminate the possibility of lobbying activities. How do voters work? They simply need to list the top seven hotels they have stayed at in the last 24 months in order of preference.
