Ooty: In the Nilgiris, leaf procurement fell by 50 per cent due to frost.

In the Nilgiris, 15 cooperative tea factories are functioning in the district under the control of Kunnar Incoserve (Cooperative Internet). 30 thousand people are members.

Here, on an average, 1.80 crore kg of leaves are procured annually through cooperative industries alone. 60 percent of the tea plantations were charred due to increased frost which started late this year.

There was a purchase of 15 thousand kg of leaves per day in the factories. The daily leaf procurement has come down to 3,000 kg in the last one week due to increased impact of frost.

Factory management is struggling to keep up with production costs. 50 percent of workers are unemployed. Horticulture department officials are investigating the affected areas.

Small Tea Farmers Association President Raman Choukai said, “Tea farming is the main industry in the Nilgiris. Due to the frost, 60 percent of the tea plants were charred, leaving the farmers in financial crisis. The government should provide appropriate relief,” he said
