52% of women in Kerala say it is not wrong for a husband to abuse his wife – NFHS survey | nfhs | domestic violence

by time news

New Delhi: More than 30 per cent women have justified their husbands’ abuse of their wives. The shocking figures are from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS). A survey of 18 places, including the states and union territories, found that more than 30 per cent of women in 14 states said that in some cases, a husband could justify abusing his wife. At the same time, very few men commented that such behavior was right.

In both states, more than 80 per cent of women think that men are justified in beating their wives. In Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, 84 per cent women expressed this opinion. In Karnataka, meanwhile, 77 per cent of women support the practice. In Kerala, 52% of women justify their husbands beating their wives.

The figures for some other states are as follows

Manipur (66%), Jammu and Kashmir (49%), Maharashtra (44%) and West Bengal (42%) have the highest percentage of women who say that it is not wrong for a husband to abuse his wife.

The question in the NFHS was whether the husband could be justified in beating or beating his wife. (There were some circumstances for this: suspicion that the wife was not faithful to him, disrespecting the husband’s parents, arguing with the husband, refusing to have sex, going out without telling the husband, neglecting the house and children, not cooking well.)

More than 30 per cent of women in 14 states, including states and union territories surveyed, answered “yes”. Himachal Pradesh has the lowest number of women in favor of husbands abusing their wives. 14.8 per cent of women said there was nothing wrong with beating.

In Karnataka, 81.9 per cent of men said they could find justice in abusing their wives, while in Himachal Pradesh only 14.8 per cent shared the same view.
