Donation handover in the Holzgerlingen Mauritius Church Photo: Local History Association
In autumn the Mauritius Church in Holzgerlingen turned 550 years old. A historical volume was also created to mark the anniversary.
The history of the Mauritius Church is closely linked to “Mechthild von der Pfalz”, who lived at Böblingen Castle in the middle of the 15th century. This was Mechthild’s widow’s residence after the death of her first husband, Count Ludwig I of Württemberg. Her wedding to her second husband, Archduke Albert VI, took place there. of Austria, celebrated – probably a magnificent event for the city. Even after that, Mechthild spent a lot of time in Böblingen. At that time, Holzgerlingen also belonged to this seat.
Mechthild was the driving force behind the renovation of the Mauritius Church (St. Moritz). The year 1473 was mentioned in the annals. The handover of the benefice from Holzgerlingen and other donations from Mechthild ultimately made it possible to finance the University of Tübingen, which Mechthild founded with her son Eberhard.
The book was created thanks to donations
The Mauritius Church was built as a Catholic church. But it has been Protestant since 1534. Ambrosius Blarer, a reformer from Konstanz, asked the then pastor Valentin Reiser whether he was willing and able to pass on the Protestant teachings. Pastor Reiser was willing to do this and became the first Protestant pastor in Holzgerlingen after the Reformation.
To mark the 550th anniversary of the church, a book was published that vividly describes the eventful history of the Mauritius Church, supplemented by a few anecdotes and stories. It was written by Dieter Schittenhelm, honorary chairman of the local history association, and Pastor Traugott Messner. Donations from the Holzgerlingen Community Foundation of over 3,500 euros and the Cultural Foundation of the Kreissparkasse Böblingen over 2,500 euros made the publication possible and have now been handed over.
The book is available in Holzgerlingen at Buchplus and in the local museum.
