More than 580 people have died in heavy rains and floods in Pakistan. The country received more than 60 percent of the normal monsoon rains in three weeks. It is estimated that more than 10 lakh people have been affected by the resulting floods and landslides. Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces were the worst hit. This is the worst flood in the country in 30 years.
200 people died in the flood in Balochistan. The province received 305 percent more rainfall than the annual average, the National Disaster Management Authority said. Out of the 26 districts of Balochistan, 18 districts have been declared disaster-affected by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority. Cholera cases have also been reported in the region. Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif visited the region twice this month. He said that efforts are being made to provide extensive relief and rehabilitation to the flood victims. The opposition alleges that despite the warning issued by the Meteorological Center, no advance arrangements were made to deal with the flood.
