Berlin plans to ban critical components from Chinese suppliers from 2026 in Germany’s public mobile networks. Now Beijing has reacted.

Peking.

China’s Foreign Ministry has criticized Germany’s possible abandonment of Chinese 5G technology. “We have always rejected the fact that – no matter which country – questions about the economy, trade, science and technology are politicized,” said spokeswoman Mao Ning in Beijing.

She was responding to a question about a possible ban on products from the Chinese tech group Huawei in Germany. China believes that all countries should provide their companies with a fair, non-discriminatory and transparent business environment.

That is planned

The Federal Ministry of the Interior aims to ensure that so-called critical components from Chinese suppliers will no longer be used in Germany’s public mobile communications networks from January 1, 2026. According to government circles in Berlin, the “core network” would be affected.

The concern is that the Chinese government could exert influence on Chinese high-tech companies such as Huawei and ZTE to spy on mobile phone connections in Germany or cause a blackout in the event of a conflict.

The Federal Ministry of the Interior also wants to make Germany less dependent on China when it comes to building 5G networks. However, there is a dispute in the federal government between Nancy Faeser’s SPD-led Interior Ministry and Volker Wissing’s (FDP) Digital Ministry over how to handle the technical components. A spokesman for the Digital Ministry pointed out the day before that the federal government had not yet made a decision. According to him, “high standards and strict regulations” already apply to the 5G expansion. (dpa)
