6 Skin Diseases to Watch Out for During the Rainy Season

Walking through stagnant water during the rainy season can put you at risk for various skin diseases. If you notice any abnormal symptoms, it is important to see a doctor immediately.

Dr. Phairot Suratanavanich, Deputy Director-General of the medical department, explains that the rainy season, with its flooding and humid weather, is a major factor contributing to the occurrence of different skin diseases. Most of these diseases are caused by fungi or bacteria, which thrive in the weather and environment during the rainy season. Therefore, people who venture outside their homes and come into contact with rainwater are more likely to encounter these skin problems. It is essential to constantly observe yourself for any skin abnormalities and consult a specialist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Dr. Chanisa Kiatsurayanon, from the Institute of Dermatology, listed some common skin diseases during the rainy season:

1. Ringworm: This appears as circular rashes with flaky skin, often in different colors. It is commonly found on the body, especially in areas such as the back, chest, stomach, shoulders, and neck. People who sweat a lot or wear damp clothes are particularly susceptible.

2. Ringworm: This presents as a circular rash with clear boundaries and scales. It begins with itching, followed by a spreading red rash, which can be extremely itchy. It is often found in moist areas like the scalp, armpits, breasts, groin, soles, and between the toes.

3. Smelly feet: Certain bacteria on the epidermis can cause this condition. It is characterized by dry and peeling feet. The odor is more intense than usual, and there are small holes and pores on the soles of the feet and between the toes.

4. Athlete’s foot: Skin irritation from dampness, combined with touching dirt in flooded areas after rain, can lead to a rash on the feet and between the toes. Some individuals may also develop a fungal or bacterial infection.

5. Atopic dermatitis: Changes in temperature and humidity during the rainy season can trigger this condition. Common symptoms include red rashes, dryness, peeling, and itching in areas such as the crook of the arm, leg, face, and neck.

6. Dermatitis: The increase in various insects like mosquitoes, fleas, mites, and rove beetles during the rainy season can cause rashes upon contact. Severe allergic reactions should be evaluated by a doctor.

To prevent these skin diseases and take care of yourself during the rainy season, follow these tips:

1. Take a shower, wash your hair, and clean your body immediately after being exposed to rain.
2. Wear clean, completely dry clothes to avoid moisture buildup.
3. Wash your hands and feet after wading in water.
4. If you notice any skin problems, seek medical attention promptly.

By staying vigilant and practicing good hygiene, you can protect yourself from the skin ailments that often accompany the rainy season.
