/ The police in New York State, USA, announced on Tuesday that one person was killed and five others were injured in a shooting during a fight that took place in a subway station.

Police officials said during a press conference held at the station that the dead man was a 34-year-old man, and the five wounded were two women and three men, ranging in age from 14 to 71, according to Agence France-Presse.

The shooting took place at the Mount Eden Avenue station in the Bronx, where the train passes over a suspension bridge.

Police Commissioner Michael Kemper said during a press conference held under the bridge that what happened was not a “random” shooting of passengers, but rather a fight between two groups of young men, during which one of them opened fire.

He added that two groups of young men were on board the train when a quarrel broke out between them, and one of them pulled out his gun and opened fire at the moment the train was arriving at the station, opening its carriage doors, and passengers were getting on and off.

The commissioner did not reveal the identity of the victims, but explained that “one of them, a 34-year-old man, unfortunately died” in hospital from his injuries.

A New York Fire Department spokesman told AFP by email that four of the injured “had serious injuries and the fifth had minor injuries.”

Brooks, in upstate New York, is the poorest neighborhood in the city of 8.5 million people.

An AFP photographer reported that the police had set up a security cordon around the station, and police and ambulance vehicles were deployed around it.

Local TV channels broadcast aerial footage of the metro station, showing the train stopped and police and plainclothes investigators deployed at the site.

As a result of the Covid pandemic, the crime rate in New York has declined, especially gun homicides.

New York authorities impose strict restrictions on carrying firearms in public places, compared to other cities and states in the United States.
