Madurai: The Madurai branch of the High Court has sentenced YouTuber Chavuk Shankar to 6 months imprisonment in a criminal contempt of court case.

Chennai-based YouTuber Savuk Shankar. He posted a comment on Twitter saying, ‘Justice Department is tainted with corruption’. For this, the Madurai branch of the High Court filed a criminal contempt case against him. Justices GR Swaminathan and B. Bhujahendi heard the case.

When this case came up for hearing, Savuk Shankar, who appeared in the court, said, “We need time to file a reply to the contempt of court petition. “The court should provide me with the video recordings and other records indicating the reason for taking the contempt action,” he said. And he said, “‘I stand by what I have said.’

In this case, the contempt of court case came up for hearing again today in the session of Judges GR Swaminathan and B. Bhujahendi. Then Chavku Shankar appeared in person.

Senior advocate Somayaji, who has been appointed as amicus curiae (assistant to the court) in the case, argued through video, “What Chavuku Shankar has said and written is contempt of court. He should be punished for this,” he said. The judges adjourned the verdict for the evening.

In the evening, the judges sentenced Chavku Shankar to 6 months imprisonment in the contempt of court case. They also ordered the removal of his court-related comments on social media.

Chavku Shankar requested that the sentence be suspended. But the judges rejected it.
