Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille and Kenyan President William Ruto are strengthening cooperation between the two countries around security with the announcement of the deployment of 600 Kenyan police officers to Haiti.

At the invitation of the President of the Republic of Kenya, William Ruto, the Haitian Prime Minister, Garry Conille, is making a two-day official visit to Kenya on October 11 and 12, 2024. This visit, marked by fruitful exchanges, testifies to the strengthening relations between the two nations, with a particular emphasis on security cooperation.

This meeting follows the commitment made by President Ruto during the deployment of the Kenyan contingent of the Multinational Security Support Mission to Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in September 2024. The discussions between the two leaders focused on bilateral, regional and international issues, including peace, security and economic development.

The two heads of state reaffirmed their support for the multinational security support mission, mandated by the United Nations Security Council and led by Kenya. They welcomed the progress made since the initial deployment of Kenyan forces, including regaining control of critical infrastructure such as the general hospital, the port and the national palace. The restoration of security at the airport, facilitating the resumption of commercial flights, was also highlighted.

During a joint press conference at State House in Nairobi, President Ruto called on the international community to strengthen its support for the mission in Haiti. “For a peaceful, stable and secure Haiti, our global partners must accelerate their contribution in personnel, logistics and finances to expand the mission,” he said. Prime Minister Garry Conille supported this call, emphasizing the importance of a coordinated international response to restore security in Haiti.

Furthermore, the two leaders discussed issues of bilateral cooperation, including the promotion of tourism and the strengthening of interpersonal relations between Kenya and Haiti. This desire to expand mutually beneficial cooperation demonstrates the two countries’ commitment to strengthening their historical and economic ties.

President Ruto and Prime Minister Conille also welcomed the adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2751 (2024), renewing the mandate of the support mission in Haiti. They urged the international community to provide the necessary resources to ensure the success of this mission. The two countries reaffirmed their desire to strengthen relations between the African Union and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), emphasizing unity, cooperation and progress.

Finally, the Kenyan police force announced that 600 new police officers will be deployed to Haiti after completing their training. This reinforcement of troops aims to consolidate stabilization and security efforts in Haiti.
