Laoly said that the implementation of Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning Corrections and the ratification of Law Number 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, correctional institutions must be prepared to be involved in transition to a new criminal paradigm.

In the future, the criminal system must not only provide just solutions, but also aim to restore.

“Law must be considered as a tool for social change for the better,” said Yasonna.

The 60th Correctional Service Day (HBP) was held at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights grounds, Monday (29/4).

Yasonna emphasized that the application of punishment in the form of imprisonment needs to be reviewed, taking into account humanitarian aspects, the philosophy of punishment and the socio-economic conditions of the country.

He also stated that prisons were ineffective in dealing with crime, and even had detrimental impacts.

Therefore, non-prison criminal alternatives need to be strengthened.

Corrections have an important role in ensuring the rights of incarcerated individuals, providing rehabilitation to law violators, and protecting society from crime.
