Poland has charged 62 officials from the former government of the conservative Law and Justice party with crimes related to financial abuse. An investigation is underway against more than 100 people, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced today.
Tusk’s pro-European coalition government, in power since last December, has made it a priority to hold accountable those it accuses of wrongdoing under the previous nationalist government.
The conservative nationalist Law and Justice party has not yet responded to a request for comment from Reuters, but its politicians have repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
“After six months, we have 62 people from the previous ruling elite who have been indicted. This has never happened in history before our predecessors,” Tusk told reporters, without specifying who those officials were or what charges were brought against them.
Tusk also said the government was carrying out additional procedures and 200 tax inspectors were investigating a total of 90 departments in 17 ministries, with potential irregularities estimated to be worth up to 100 billion zlotys ($25.23 billion).
