The director of the Central Office for the Repression of Cybercrime (Ocrc), Donatien Sokou gave an update on the tracking of his service against cybercriminals throughout the national territory. In an item released by the Presidency of the Republic, as part of Year 2 of the Government Action Program (PAG), he revealed that 623 people, including 39 women, were arrested for acts of cybercrime in Benin from the 1st January to May 31, 2023. According to him, these individuals arrested by the Ocrc have caused enormous damage to the country which is estimated at more than 741 million CFA francs. Compared to the cash seized, the Commissioner of Police stressed that they are valued at more than 89 million CFA francs. “We were also able to get our hands on 57 motorcycles and 34 vehicles,” he said. According to him, the figures communicated were obtained over an operation period of five months in 2023, i.e. from January 1 to May 31, 2023. The Director of Ocrc pointed out that the figures for the first five months of 2023 saw a sharp uptick from those of the full year 2022. “In 2022, we were able to arrest 728 people, including 24 women. We were able to seize 29,577,303 FCFA. The OCRC seized during its operations 45 motorcycles and 52 vehicles in 2022,” the OCRC boss revealed. It should be noted that a total of 1,351 cybercriminals were arrested in Benin between 2022 and 2023 for damages estimated at 1,404 million FCFA.
