Since 2015, the number of electric cars in Latvia has increased 33 times, and a special boom in electric cars took place in 2023, when electricity prices fell on the stock exchange and various support measures were available.

According to the latest data, the number of new registered electric cars sold in Latvia is higher than in Lithuania and Estonia. In total, Latvia is ahead of 12 European Union countries, such as Poland, Spain, Italy, Greece and others.

The Minister of Climate and Energy Kaspars Melnis (ZZS) states that, along with the dynamism of the electric car industry, it is equally important to ensure that the infrastructure of charging and electric network, as well as the payment for electric car charging, is convenient, friendly and fast for people.

“This is the next step for us as a ministry to promote the availability of the common service – from the possibilities of purchasing electric cars to charging,” emphasizes Melnis.

In the support program for residents, 1,650 electric cars and hybrid cars have been purchased in two years. The support program started its operation in the spring of 2022.

KEM states that in the support program for the purchase of a new electric car, the support is 4,500 euros, and for the purchase of a used electric car and a new hybrid car – 2,250 euros. Residents can receive additional support if they hand over their old internal combustion engine car to a processing company, receiving 1,000 euros for it.

In order to stimulate the use of climate-friendly cars among the population, especially in more remote regions, where relatively long distances are measured, KEM plans to increase the support for citizens for the purchase of new hybrid cars from EUR 2,500 to EUR 4,500. Support could be available from the third quarter of this year.
