65 years ago today, one of the most traumatic events in world football took place. The Manchester United players, returning from a cup match in a European factory, took off from Germany back to England, but the plane crashed, killing 23 of the 44 passengers on board.

Among the dead in the crash were also, as mentioned, eight of the Red Devils players, who were called “Busby’s Babies”. The memory of the disaster is being honored around the world, with the team itself holding its annual memorial ceremony with the participation of the club’s staff and city residents.

The official announcement from the club reads: “On February 6, 1958, a charter plane crashed after refueling in Munich. The accident claimed the lives of 23 people, including eight Manchester United players and three officials. We will never forget.”

Many groups in the world and in England did not remain indifferent to the tragic day. So did the city rival, Manchester City, who tweeted: “City and United have always been rivals, but when it comes to important things, the blue and red have always stood by each other. On the 65th anniversary of the air disaster in Munich, we pay respect to the unity of our city.”
