“I want to go down to Muju-gun, which has good transportation, and do forestry. How can I purchase forest land? Which land would be better between a semi-preserved forest and a preserved forest?”

On the 30th, Mr. Kang Ki-jeong (55), who visited the ‘Return to Farming and Return to the Countryside’ at the first exhibition hall of the ‘2024 A-Farm Show’, asked detailed questions about the forests and surrounding environment of Muju-gun and whether they are manageable at the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province booth. In response, a Muju-gun official explained the pros and cons of each forest for about 10 minutes, writing down the characteristics of each forest on a piece of paper. Mr. Kang nodded and made plans to go down to Muju on the 10th of next month, when the two-month living program begins, to personally inspect the forests.

Mr. Kang, who has been collecting information on returning to farming and rural areas since 2016, said, “There is a lot of information floating around, but there was no place where I could get such detailed and accurate advice,” and “(This year’s A Farm Show) was an important opportunity to decide whether I could make a living in the countryside.” The 80 booths set up by 66 local governments across the country at the Return to Farm and Rural Areas Hall were visited by ‘aspiring farmers and rural area returners’ like Mr. Kang, who were looking for the information they needed.

Mr. Won (61), from Gwacheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, asked questions repeatedly while receiving consultation at the booth of Cheongsong-gun, Gyeongbuk, famous for its apples, such as “What kinds of apples can I grow in Cheongsong?” and “How do I apply for the farming experience?” A Cheongsong-gun official recommended the Shinano Gold variety, famous for “Cheongsong Golden Apples,” and explained that if the apples grown do not sell well, they can receive support from Cheongsong-gun. Won said, “I had a lot of concerns about my old age after retirement, but I am now confident about farming,” and “It was good to be able to learn about farming information from various local governments in one place.”

Mr. Lee Dol (74, Yongin-si, Gyeonggi-do), who received rural village consultation at the Yeoju-si booth in Gyeonggi-do, also said, “I have been visiting the A Farm Show for three years to find a quiet place in the metropolitan area where I can build and live in a country house.”

● “Come to the Atopy-Free School through Rural Study Abroad”

The Rural Study Abroad Hall, which was first set up in the 2nd exhibition hall, attracted the attention of parents who were curious about rural school study abroad that can foster sensibility and creativity. Seol Eun-hee (41, female), who visited the Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education booth with her 6-year-old son, said, “I’m interested in rural study abroad, but it wasn’t easy to get information,” and asked, “Do you mainly study agriculture instead of the curriculum?” In response, Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education Director Jeong Da-jeong said, “The general curriculum and ecological programs that fit the characteristics of the region are run together,” and explained, “For example, Gurye County, which borders the Seomjin River and Jirisan Mountain, operates experiential programs where you can feel the mountains and rivers that change with the seasons.”

This year’s A-Farm Show also features rural study abroad centers in Jeonbuk and Seoul. Jeonbuk is leading the way with specialized rural study abroad programs, while Seoul is supporting expenses in cooperation with Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Gangwon. An official from the Jeonbuk Provincial Office of Education said, “We are operating specialized programs in various fields such as nature, ecology, society, and history, such as the Atopy Safe School program at Jorim Elementary School in Jinan County.”
