According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, an earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale occurred at around 4:43 p.m. on this day, 30 km southeast of Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture, Japan. The epicenter was at 3.18 degrees north latitude and 131.7 degrees east longitude. The depth of the epicenter is estimated to be 30 km.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued a tsunami warning of up to 1 meter in height for Miyazaki, Oita, Kagoshima, and Shikoku prefectures of Kochi and Ehime. Local public broadcaster NHK reported, “Residents in areas under the warning should stay away from the coast or rivers.”
This earthquake caused a maximum intensity of 6- (weak) to be observed in the Miyazaki Prefecture area. The Japan Meteorological Agency’s earthquake scale, intensity, is a relative concept that numerically expresses the degree to which people feel or nearby objects shake when an earthquake occurs.
In the aftermath of this earthquake, 11 regrettable reports were received in Gyeongbuk, Korea, but no casualties or property damage was reported. Our Korea Meteorological Administration said, “The earthquake may be felt in some areas of the country. There will be no domestic tsunami impact.”
