7 crores to repair 100 water bodies Dinamalar

Chennai: There are more than 40 thousand water bodies throughout Tamil Nadu. These are ground water sources. These water bodies are severely affected due to urban development encroachment and pollution.

Schemes are announced through various departments to rectify these. 14 water bodies including Chennai Pallikarana Swamp have been included in the list of international recognition known as ‘Ramsar’.

The Tamil Nadu Wetlands Authority has stepped up work to improve these water bodies. Accordingly, 100 water bodies are to be improved at a cost of 7 crore rupees. Forest department officials said that not only government departments but also voluntary organizations are involved in this work.
