A policy decision has been taken to waive the demurrage charge of 7 days for containers waiting at Chittagong port in readymade garment sector to help export of goods.

He informed about this decision when a delegation led by Bangladesh Garments Manufacturing Export Association (BGMEA) President SM Mannan (Kochi) came to meet the State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Sunday (July 28).

At this time, the state minister said that Chittagong port is the driving force of the country’s economy. Chittagong Port was operating during the recent anti-national activities. Exporters of ready-made garments were not able to clear the goods on time due to lack of online connectivity/slowness in Chittagong Port and Customs servers due to burning of digital service-data center by miscreants. Currently, due to the activation of the servers of ports and customs, the process of goods release has started. A policy decision has been taken to waive the demurrage charge for 7 days for the waiting containers of the garment sector to facilitate the uninterrupted execution of import and export activities through the Chittagong port and the export of goods within the lead time specified by the buyer.
