Hurricane Veil, a super-strong storm that killed seven people as it passed through the Caribbean Sea, is approaching Jamaica.

According to AFP on the 2nd (local time), the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) announced that Hurricane Veil is expected to pass over or near Jamaica on the 3rd.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect for Jamaica as Beryl moves forward. Maximum winds are expected to be 240 km/h. In addition to the strong winds, the NHC warns that heavy rain and flooding are also expected.

Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said: “I urge all Jamaicans to stock up on food, batteries, candles and water. Keep important documents safe and remove any objects or trees that could cause damage to property.”

Beryl is a super-strong hurricane that reached Category 4 in June and grew to the highest Category 5 in July. It previously struck the Caribbean islands and South America, causing casualties. This disaster killed three people in Grenada, one in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and three in Venezuela.

Accordingly, the Grenada meeting of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries scheduled for this week has also been postponed. Classes have also been cancelled on several islands.

After passing Jamaica, Beryl is expected to pass near the Cayman Islands, a British Caribbean territory, on the 4th. A hurricane warning has also been issued for the Cayman Islands.

Earlier, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) announced in late May that it expected this year to be a special “hurricane season” with up to seven Category 3 or higher hurricanes.

“Climate change is causing new and destructive disasters at record levels,” said Simon Steel, the UN climate change chief. “The climate crisis is making catastrophes of a scale once thought of as science fiction now meteorological reality.”
