First, don’t drink too much. Second, don’t go overboard with the boss
“The right person” is a special project of “24 hours” about professional success, career growth, personal development, workplace relations, about good practices of employers, about news from the HR sector and management, about the labor market and vacancies .
The company you work for has an anniversary. And the bosses invite to a celebration.
Great. The goal is to have fun, but remember that your behavior at this gathering can make or break your career.
First very carefully study where the party will be, for to consider what to wear. At a disco party you will look ridiculous in heavy clothes, at dinner in a luxury restaurant you should not be a negligee.
Even if you have a great designer outfit, though, think about wearing it. It’s not good for colleagues to envy you, and being more elite dressed than the boss is not helpful. He may think your salary is too high. The same goes for jewelry.
The outfit is especially important for ladies – even if the revealing dress looks great on you, you should put an idea more conservative. Kparty, but it’s part of the job. However, do not go in the clothes you wear to the office – you will show disrespect for the efforts of the boss to organize a holiday.
In case you are new to the company and this will be your first party there, by all means ask colleagues if there are any traditions. Sometimes it turns out that you also need preparation for a celebration – for example, a witty and meaningful toast during dinner or a catchy song with which you will greet your boss at the karaoke part of the party.
The main rule is to be careful with alcohol. An overly cheerful or, God forbid, drunk colleague is not pleasant to anyone. This can be as damaging to a career as a blunder in everyday work.
Food should not be abused either. You will not shine with a constantly overflowing plate, like you haven’t eaten in a week and you’ve been specifically waiting for that cocktail to stuff yourself. Don’t slide trays from the buffet to yours under the pretense of feeding your co-workers.
If you are at dinner and can order yourself, don’t choose the most expensive thing on the menu. The company pays, but the boss will not be happy that you decided to try white truffles for the first time tonight. Of course, do not be too modest in the order, so that they do not think you are stupid.
The second basic rule is to refrain from flirting. It is true that the situation is conducive, but should you court your colleague in front of everyone? If you like it that much, make an appointment somewhere else.
An informal meeting is a convenient opportunity to talk with the boss and with people from other departments with whom you rarely come into contact. However, be careful not to be annoying. Especially the boss. And here he remains the boss, dictates the rules. And even if he willingly talks with you, your colleagues will consider you a slanderer.
Attention – don’t try to negotiate a higher salary or other business matters. It’s unlikely to work, and you’ll make a very bad impression. It’s a celebration. If you really think you deserve more money or a higher position, ask for it in an office meeting, at least so you have time and silence to motivate yourself as to why you deserve it.
Whatever flaws the party may have, don’t criticize them that night or the next day. On the contrary, find a way to thank the managers for doing so. Hundreds of other companies and departments do not consider it necessary to make such expenses. So you are one of the lucky ones.
