The liturgical songs of Lent have particular characteristics that differentiate them from those used in other liturgical times.
The General Instruction of the Roman Missal states that “the sound of the organ and other instruments during Lent is allowed only to support the singing”, so the music at this time usually has a sober character.
The themes dealt with in the readings also have an impact on the lyrics of the Lenten chants, as they speak to us about the preparation for Easter, the experience of the desert, the covenant, and conversion.
