7 Ministers prepare direct inspection delta crop damage report

Chennai: A report has been prepared by a committee of ministers set up to look into crop damage details in delta districts. The chief is said to have filed a damage report today. It has been raining in many parts of Tamil Nadu for the last few days. Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu districts were submerged due to heavy rains. Especially in Chennai, the residential area was flooded. Thus Chief Minister MK Stalin and IAS officers formed a committee of ministers and engaged in rescue operations day and night. Rescue operations have been intensified as floodwaters continue to recede in many places.

Crops in Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram districts were also affected by the floods. At the same time delta districts were also found to have high levels of crop damage. Crops have been submerged due to heavy rains, especially in the delta districts. Chief Minister MK Stalin set up a committee of ministers to study the matter and take immediate action to protect the present crops and to know the details of crop damage. The committee was set up under the chairmanship of Cooperatives Minister I. Periyasamy. Among them, Industry Minister Thangam Tennarasu and Rural Development Minister K.R. Periyakaruppan, Law Minister S. Raghupathi, Food Minister Chakrabarty, School Education Minister Mahesh Poyya Language, Environment, Climate Change, Youth Welfare and Sports Development Minister Siva Meyyanathan were present.

The team visited the delta districts on the 12th and visited the affected areas to expedite the relief efforts. Village wise survey work was carried out. The Cabinet visited Nagai, Mayiladuthurai, Tanjore, Thiruvarur, Cuddalore and Pudukottai districts. Similarly, on the 12th the Chief Minister visited MK Stalin directly. He also inspected and heard complaints from the public. The study revealed that one lakh acres of crops including paddy, cotton and groundnut were affected. Its value is expected to be in the hundreds of crores. The Committee of Ministers has been engaged in the task of preparing the report for the last two days after the inspection. Ministers have now completed the report.

Chief Minister MK Stalin inspected the Kanyakumari area yesterday. He returned to Chennai yesterday evening. Following that, the Committee of Ministers is expected to submit a report to the Chief Minister today. The report will then be sent to the Central Government along with details of the damage in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Chengalpattu and Kanchipuram districts and relief assistance will be sought, an official said.
