General members made 7-point demands, including the dissolution of the current board of directors of Bangladesh Made Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and BGMEA University of Fashion and Technology. They also demanded the formation of an interim management board of 20 members free from party influence after discussing with the members.

These demands were announced at a press conference organized under the banner of ordinary members at a hotel in the capital on Saturday (August 31). At that time, Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, Managing Director of Maisha Fashions, Inamul Haque Khan Bablu, Managing Director of Anant Garments were present on behalf of the general members of BGMEA.

The demands made in the press conference organized under the banner of the general members are- formation of an interim management board of 20 members free from party influence in consultation with the members; The Interim Board of Directors will prepare a transparent voter list and conduct a fair election as soon as possible; Formation of a judicial inquiry committee for transparent and proper investigation of all past corruptions of BGMEA; Sheikh Hasina’s friend BGMEA University (BUFT) is the current chairman. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin along with the current board was dissolved and a new board was formed; BGMEA University (BUFT) was killed in the movement of former students. Payment of compensation to those killed and injured including Salim Talukdar and declaration of Shaheed Salim Chatwar at BGMEA University (BUFT) campus.

Mozammel Haque Bhuiyan, managing director of Maisha Fashions, said in a written statement that BGMEA is the top organization of Bangladesh’s garment industry. 80 percent of the country’s total export income comes from this garment industry. The role of this sector in Bangladesh’s economic development and employment creation is undeniable. The current board of directors came to power through extensive rigging and vote fraud in the March 9 election. Which caused great anger among the common members.

He said that the members of the current BGMEA board of directors are the subordinates of the fugitive president and general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League SM Mannan Kochi. In the BGMEA board elections, SM Mannan Kochi and his party cadre seized power of the organization. In this work former member of parliament Salam Murshedi, Md. Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin, Md. Khasru Chowdhury, Awami League Secretary for Industry and Commerce Siddiqur Rahman and Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam participated directly with his forces. Former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi is also involved. On August 27, an exchange meeting was held with the current committee president, vice president and two former presidents of BGMEA under the chairmanship of Finance and Commerce Advisor. In that meeting, a vice-president accused in the case of killing students in the anti-discrimination student movement was invited. Which created a lot of anger among the common members. The general members of the organization do not accept the appointment of Khandkar Rafiqul Islam, vice president of the current committee of Kochi, the general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan North Awami League SM Mannan, who killed the student crowd in the anti-discrimination student movement, as the president of BGMEA. The general members demanded immediate cancellation of his appointment and dissolution of the board of directors.

He also said that Sheikh Hasina’s friend is the current chairman of BGMEA University (BUFT). Shafiul Islam Mohiuddin along with demand to dissolve the current board and form a new board.
