700 grams of gold seized from passenger at airport

Ernakulam: The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) at Kerala’s Cochin airport on Sunday seized more than 700 grams of gold from a passenger arriving from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. According to Customs Department officials, the gold of foreign origin was in mixed form, weighing 797 grams and worth around Rs 40 lakh.
On the basis of profiling, AIU officials stopped the passenger on the green channel.

He said that upon examining the passenger, three capsule-shaped white packets were recovered from him, which were suspected to contain gold in paste form.

Further investigation is ongoing.
Earlier in October last year, customs officials at Cochin airport had arrested a person and seized 24 carat gold rings of foreign origin weighing 488.50 grams and gold jewelery weighing 130.80 grams. The weight of the recovered gold is 619.30 grams whose value is estimated at Rs 33.35 lakh.
