The deficiencies of the health system in our country are quite noticeable. From the conditions of the hospitals to the number of staff, the service for patients is not optimal. Despite the above, the arrival and participation of Cuban doctors in Mexico has not been taken in the best way.
In the first instance, according to the Ministry of Health (SSa) there is deficit of 200 thousand health professionals in our country. Of that number, at least 70,000 correspond to specialists.
On the other hand, there are also voices that affirm that the problem is not the number of doctors but their distribution. While the country’s major cities have enough staff, rural areas lack health services and do not even have well-equipped hospitals.
Cuban doctors in Mexico, good or bad idea?
Based on the current scenario, In 2022, an agreement was signed to allow the arrival of Cuban doctors to Mexico. The objective of this strategy is to send the doctors to the rural areas where the most deprived people are.
However, today President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced that So far, 700 Cuban doctors have arrived in Mexico. All are specialists and work in different hospitals in the country.
The entities in which the Caribbean doctors have been distributed are Nayarit, Tlaxcala, Colima, Baja California Sur, Sonora, Campeche, Guerrero, Veracruz, Michoacán, Morelos, Oaxaca and Zacatecas.
Regarding specialties, the Cuban doctors who have arrived are internists, pediatricians, surgeons, family doctors, ophthalmologists and nephrologists. Also intensivists, imaging specialists, cardiologists, otolaryngologists, geriatricians, gastroenterologists, neurologists, oncologists, orthopedists, psychiatrists, allergists, anesthesiologists.
Recruitment of retired Mexican doctors
On the other hand, the president indicated that the Call of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) to hire retired doctors. The goal is that people who still have energy and desire to work can do so.
In this case, all those interested will receive 47 thousand 441 net monthly pesos, 20 days of bonus and vacations. In addition, they will work in 8-hour shifts from Monday to Friday or in the accumulated weekend shift, and they will not lose their retirement with Social Security.
On the other hand, according to the records there are 27 thousand 398 doctors and medical specialists retired from the IMSS. In the first stage, only 50 were hired, but it is expected that more retired doctors will be included in the following ones.
