In the first half of this year, 55,542 sales of electrified passenger cars have accumulated, a figure that is still insufficient to reach the goal of 190,000 electrified passenger cars in 2023.

A large part of consumers are not familiar with the market and are unaware of aspects such as savings or the price of an electric model, this lack of knowledge being the main barrier to achieving greater penetration of electric vehicles in Spain.

According to the first edition of a barometer to analyze the penetration of electric vehicles in Spain prepared by Chippio, the lack of knowledge of the sector on the part of Spaniards is the main stumbling block for the adoption of electric vehicles.

The data from the study shows the satisfaction and good experience of users who have already taken the step to electrifying their vehicles. Most of the drivers who have already taken the step to the energy transition are happy and satisfied: 74% rule out going back to the combustion vehicle, while 87% believe that buying an electric vehicle is a good investment.

The most common age range among owners is 34 to 44 years (29.7%), while among combustion owners there is a technical tie between drivers between 45 and 54 years and those over 65 years, representing almost a quarter of the total each (23.3%). As expected, the age of the electric fleet plummets compared to traditional drivers: two out of three electric cars have between one and three years of life.

“Today’s vehicle owner is still a young profile, concerned about sustainability and who is committed to technology, although it is to be expected that in the coming years many traditional drivers will take the step of electrification,” says Pol Brau, head of Growth and Development at Chippio. “Purchase and energy prices are increasingly competitive, and new aid such as the recent announcement of a 15% personal income tax reduction for the purchase of electric vehicles are weighty incentives for the energy transition.”

As keys to the study, it stands out that the vast majority of drivers do not know in a concrete and true way the real cost of these models, nor the savings that it represents compared to combustion vehicles.

Two out of three Spaniards do not know the price of the electric car either. The gradual increase in competition and the appearance of new brands on the market is leading to the appearance of increasingly affordable electric models. However, “the vision of a few years ago continues, when the EV was an expensive element and reserved for a few,” says Brau. In the current market, there are models that are around 20,000 euros, prices very similar to combustion models.

The study also reflects the aging of the Spanish private combustion fleet. 26% of the cars are between 6 and 9 years old, and 22% between 10 and 14. According to data published by Thatthe European employers’ association for car manufacturers, at the end of 2022, the average age of Spanish vehicles was 13.9 years, the European average is around 12.

In addition, the lack of charging points (46%) and the price of energy (36%), main drawbacks. The main problems with the penetration of electric vehicles in homes are the lack of collective charging points (the main problem for 46% of those surveyed), together with the price of energy (36%).
