▸In its 75th year, which was completed last Thursday, April 4, NATO did not need directors and stage sets. Europe, after all, is rapidly entering a state of war, which means that the cold war monstrosity is literally in its “field”, to the endless delight of its big boss, the USA, the new “Bonapartes” of the Old Continent and, of course, the war industries.
Is conscription back in Germany?
The 75ththe anniversary of NATO was chosen by the German government in order to present a plan for the fundamental restructuring of the armed forces. Under the pretext, as now happens in every similar case, the war in Ukraine and the risk that Russia will attack a member state of the EU and NATO. The aim of the above plan, as officially announced by the Minister of Defense, is for the country to be in the best possible position “in the event that it needs to defend itself, in the event that it needs to wage war”. It also includes the scenario of reintroducing compulsory military service – an institution that was only abolished in 2011 – which will be discussed at a political level in the coming weeks. At the same time, as is known, Berlin has pledged that this year military spending will reach at least 2% of GDP.
US commitment: Ukraine will join NATO
The certainty that Ukraine will join NATO was expressed by the US Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, at the special meeting held in Brussels on the occasion of the 75abirthday of the Alliance. And this while 25 months and some days have passed since the Russian invasion and Kiev seems to have fallen into an extremely dire position on the battlefields. So dire that, according to increasing media reports and insinuations from government and military officials in the West, it is possible that the defense lines will collapse if Russia launches the major offensive it appears to be preparing. We could reasonably assume, however, that this whole narrative is largely staged in order to create the right ground for the “militarization” of the EU and the further upgrading of NATO.
Ursula, the Covid and the “Pfizergate»
Ursula von der Leyen is at the center of investigations by the EU prosecutor for corruption, abuse of power and suspicious dealings with the Greek-born head of Pfizer, Albert Bourla – who was proudly welcomed this week by Mitsotakis, along with other pharmaceutical giants. The investigation into the so-called “Pfizergate” is focused, for now, on the huge contract signed in 2021, at the height of the pandemic, to supply the EU with millions of doses of vaccines at a total cost of more than €20 billion – many of the which were later thrown into the wastebasket as they expired or were deemed out of date for the new strains. It will be a surprise, of course, if Ursula, who is running again for the presidency of the Commission, finds herself on the bench. The “party” of some with vaccines, however, is undeniable.
