The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) 75th Anniversary Summit, to be held in Washington, D.C. from the 9th to the 11th, is expected to focus on the Pacific Ocean rather than the North Atlantic Ocean as its main agenda, unlike previous summits. There is analysis that NATO’s containment of China, which defined China as a “structural challenge” in the 2021 summit joint statement, has begun in earnest. China is also strongly opposing this.

In an interview with CBS on the 7th, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was asked, “Is the purpose of inviting the ‘IP4 (Indo-Pacific Partners)’ of South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand to devise a strategy toward China?” He answered, “Yes. The war in Ukraine shows how closely connected North Korea, China, Russia, and Iran are.” He continued to emphasize, “China is the main country that supported Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

He mentioned Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s remarks to a joint session of the U.S. House and Senate in April, saying, “What happens in Ukraine today could happen in Asia tomorrow,” and called for “joint efforts to check China.” There is also analysis that NATO is likely to sign its first joint document with the IP4 countries at this summit.

This is a big difference from just a few years ago, when major European and Asian countries were considered to be geopolitically separate from each other. However, the atmosphere changed as it became clear that North Korea and China were supporting Russia, which invaded Ukraine, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) diagnosed.

Some in the U.S. are also urging South Korea to actively cooperate with NATO. Former U.S. National Intelligence Council (NIC) North Korea officer Sidney Seiler advised Voice of America (VOA) on the 7th, “If South Korea helps Ukraine in trouble (by aligning with NATO), it will strengthen South Korea’s international status and help secure deterrence against potential crises (on the Korean Peninsula).”

This joint statement is also expected to include criticism of China’s support for Russia. On the other hand, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said on the 8th, “NATO is a relic of the Cold War and a source of danger that threatens world peace and stability,” and “(NATO) should not try to disrupt the Asia-Pacific region following Europe.”
