Pope Francis has elected Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna, as the new President of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI).

Pope Francis has opened the 76th General Assembly of Italian Catholic Bishops this evening, May 23.

This evening, Pope Francis met with the Italian bishops, who are currently in the General Assembly to discuss their role in the Church’s concerted journey, for about two hours, meeting with Pope Paul VI at the Vatican.

“Listening to Sovereign Partitions: Clear Choice: What Should Be the Priority in a Coordinated Journey?” The conference is being held at the Rome Hilton Airport Passenger House.

It was also announced on Tuesday that Pope Francis has elected Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi, Archbishop of Bologna, as the new head of the Italian Episcopal Conference (CEI).
