Eight bodies have been recovered from a gravel mine in Zambia that collapsed, in a “tragic accident” that occurred this morning, about 45 kilometers east of the capital, Lusaka, police announced.

“Unfortunately the accident resulted in a casualty, which occurred as a result of a fall at the mine site” near Chongwe, police said, adding that rescue workers “worked tirelessly throughout the day to remove an unknown number of to retrieve people who were carrying gravel at the site at the time of the tragedy.”
Police indicated that rescue operations, which were halted in the afternoon due to “difficult conditions” at the site, are scheduled to resume at dawn on Monday.
In addition to paramedics, firefighters were mobilized and a private excavator was hired to take part in rescue operations.
There are many mining areas in Zambia, and often see bloody accidents.
In December 2023, around 30 miners were killed when a copper mine collapsed in the north of the country, following a mudslide caused by heavy rain.
