81 killed in Bangladesh protests

More than 80 people were killed and hundreds injured during anti-government protests in Bangladesh on Sunday.

Clashes broke out in different parts of Dhaka and other parts of the country throughout the day. According to reports, 81 people were killed. Many died from bullet wounds. At least 14 policemen were among the dead. Several hundred people were injured. Arson, vandalism, road blockades, attacks on police stations and the seizure of buildings were reported.

In light of what is happening, the authorities have decided to tighten the curfew, which began today at 18:00 local time, and also to declare the next three days off.

The Bangladesh Army has urged people to observe the indefinite curfew as the overall law and order situation in the country has deteriorated again. “The Bangladesh Army will discharge its duties in accordance with the constitution of Bangladesh and the existing laws of the country. In this regard, people are requested to observe the curfew and also extend their full cooperation,” the army said in a press release.
