The situation remains alarming for human rights defenders, leaders and activists in the country, as reflected in the number of 87 lives claimed by violence as of June 2024.

In light of the worrying figures, the Attorney General’s Office has repeatedly called on the Government to provide the necessary guarantees of protection to social leaders, who continue to denounce abandonment and negligence on the part of national and territorial authorities in this matter.

And although the Peace Agreement was signed in 2016, violence and threats against human rights defenders continue to increase year after year in departments such as Cauca, where 18 leaders have already been murdered. The same is true in Antioquia, where statistics provided by the Ombudsman’s Office show 12 deaths, while Valle del Cauca contributes to the dramatic figure with 10 homicides, followed by the department of Arauca with 8 murders.

This is why the Attorney General of the Nation, Margarita Cabello Blanco, will be launching the IPRA- (Index of Prevention of the Risk of Threats against Social Leaders) tool next Monday, September 9, the date on which the National Human Rights Day is commemorated, which will serve to determine the institutional response to the risks warned about threatened social leaders.

And regarding the recommendations expressed by Johana Elena Rojas, Ombudsman-Huila Section, there is a need to coordinate a rapid response and in this way confront this situation of violence, “to guarantee the life and integrity of our leaders, human rights defenders, farmers, traditional indigenous authorities and members of the Communal Action Boards, through the intersectoral commission for early response and according to the regulations, ten days later a meeting of entities and sectors must be held to assume some tasks and then we as the Public Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office, follow up on these tasks.”
