World bodies preach gender equality, are seen as important forums for advancing anti-discrimination policies, and claim to be fervently committed to women’s participation. But when it comes to standing at the top of major multilateral organizations, they have been systematically excluded from leadership positions: presidents, CEOs, high commissioners and executive directors have, for decades, been predominantly men.

A new report published this Monday reveals a pattern of lack of women at the top of the most important international organizations in the world. Produced by GWL Voices, an organization of women leaders that fights for the construction of an egalitarian international system, puts the magnifying glass on the gender composition of the governing bodies and senior management teams of 54 specialized agencies, funds, programs, departments and offices of the United Nations United Nations, as well as regional development banks.
