9 departments on orange alert for thunderstorms, 3 for heat waves

The center-east of the country is affected by thunderstorm vigilance, from the middle of the night until Monday morning, with the risk of hail. The heat wave will affect the Alpes-Maritimes and Corsica.

The greatest caution is in order. Nine departments (Savoie, Haute-Savoie, Ain, Rhône, Loire, Haute-Loire, Ardèche, Drôme, Isère) in the center-east are placed under storm orange vigilance by Meteo France for the day Monday. The alert will begin overnight, ending Monday. Violent thunderstorms could break out, “likely to locally cause significant damage”, warns the organization.

And to detail: “Significant damage is locally to be feared on the light habitat and the temporary installations”, “flooding of cellars and low points can occur very quickly”, and “some departures of fires can be recorded in the forest following impacts of lightning not accompanied by precipitation”.

Hail, lightning and “temporarily strong” thunderstorms

The winds will flow “from west to east”. The storms, “punctually strong”, could be “accompanied by hail, strong gusts of wind, strong rain intensities and significant electrical activity”.

Météo-France gives some advice to apply during the alert: stay away from trees and waterways, take shelter in a solid building, stay informed, avoid moving around, protect property exposed to the wind or which may be flooded and avoid using telephones and electrical appliances.

Three departments still under the heat wave

The Alpes-Maritimes, Haute-Corse and Corse-du-Sud are still under orange vigilance for heat waves. The alert will return to yellow from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m., before going up a notch on Monday.
