9 Iranian nationals arrested in Sri Lankan waters

Nine Iranian nationals have been arrested for smuggling drugs into Sri Lanka, police said.

Nine persons arrested in Sri Lankan waters today have been brought to the Colombo naval base, police said.

Batticaloa District Intelligence Officer-in-Charge R.A.D.A.R. Based on the information received by Subodh, the police team under the guidance of Senior District Superintendent of Police Sukath Masingavilan, under the purview of LKW Kamal Silva, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eastern Province, along with the Navy were engaged in day and night surveillance for about 15 days.

In this situation, the ship that smuggled the drugs from Iran was diverted at sea. Meanwhile, the smugglers dumped about 200 kilograms of narcotics into the sea.

During this time, nine people were arrested and only drugs for their use were seized. Police said they have taken steps to bring the arrested kidnappers to justice.
