After being classified as a global public health emergency, MPOX has achieved a significant decrease in its incidence in countries like Mexico. In fact, during the two weeks the Ministry of Health (SSa) has barely registered a total of 40 probable cases and nine confirmed cases of the disease previously called monkeypox.

According to official information, the first national case occurred in May 2022. For its part, as of April 17, 2023, 6,727 people who meet the operational definition of probable case were identified. Of these, 3,965 were confirmed, 302 are under study, and 2,460 were ruled out by laboratory tests.

The Institute of Epidemiological Diagnosis and Reference (InDRE) notified that the accumulated positive cases are distributed in the 32 states:

Mexico City, two thousand 037 infections; Jalisco, 403; State of Mexico, 363; Quintana Roo, 246; Yucatan, 169; Nuevo Leon, 134; Puebla, 68; Veracruz, 65; Tabasco, 57; Chiapas, 52; Lower California, 32; Tamaulipas, 31; Queretaro, 30; Chihuahua, 27; Hidalgo, 26; and Morelos, 25.

In addition, Campeche, 23; Guanajuato, 22; Waterfalls, 19; Coahuila, 19; Sinaloa, 19; Warrior, 15; Oaxaca, 14; St. Louis Potosí, 12; Tlaxcala, 13; Nayarit, 10; Michoacan, eight; Baja California Southern, six; Colima, six; Zacatecas, six; Sonora, five; and Durango, three.

Regarding the distribution of cases by sex assigned at birth, the predominance is in men, with 97 percent. The age group from 30 to 34 years is the most prevalent, presenting 1,031 confirmed cases, that is, an incidence rate of 10 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Regarding the gender of those who provide information, 95.7 percent are male and 3.31 percent are female; 0.22 percent is non-binary; 0.14 percent, bigender; 0.22 percent, transgender; and 0.41 percent corresponds to another group.

It is important to mention that the most common symptoms reported are rash in 100 percent of the cases, followed by fever in 72.1 percent and headaches in 62.7 percent.

Those who live with it are more vulnerable to developing the disease. HIV, suffer from syphilis and diabetes mellitus, among others.

Deaths caused by MPOX in Mexico

These are 23 men and one woman, who during medical care presented lesions compatible with mpox.

Worldwide, 87,039 confirmed cases were reported in 110 countries, territories, and areas in the six regions of the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as 120 deaths.

This disease lasts an average of 21 days, and is transmitted by direct contact with the secretions of a sick person through mucous membranes or skin lesions, respiratory droplets, and objects contaminated with body fluids.

It can be prevented by avoiding direct physical contact with people who are sick or suspected of having the disease. There are practices that can increase the risk of infections, including mpox, such as sex with strangers, dark rooms or sex parties. This is due to close contact during these activities.
