9 out of 100 minors are victims of abuse, the ‘child-saving’ network grows – Health and Well-being

(ANSA) – ROME, SEPTEMBER 16 – With 75 courses and 600 hours of training held in 41 Italian cities, there are already thousands of sentinel pediatricians able to intercept signs of abuse in children and adolescents. Eight years after its launch, the ‘save children’ network, the network for recognizing and managing violence against minors, is increasingly larger. But 9 out of 100 children are victims of abuse and it is often difficult to identify them.
For this reason, the courses of the project “Facing Abuse 3.0” will start again from Perugia and will continue in 7 other cities, realized thanks to the unconditional contribution of Menarini and with the patronage of the Italian Society of Pediatrics.
The project, the first and longest-running in the world, will continue in 2024 to make the ‘baby-saving’ network increasingly widespread and efficient. “Thanks to the project, standard emergency room protocols have been created or implemented to recognize sexual and physical violence and training courses have been started in degree courses aimed at future doctors and specialists”, explains Pietro Ferrara, national coordinator of the courses and full professor of Pediatrics at the Campus Bio-Medico University of Rome. According to a survey conducted in 148 hospitals in 29 countries, including Italy, in half of the facilities, healthcare workers do not have adequate tools to identify minors who are victims of negligence and abuse.
A gap that the courses are helping to fill. “In the past, it could happen that doctors not only had difficulty recognizing the warning signs of abuse, but also had doubts in managing them. Thanks to the courses,” adds Ferrara, “the taboo of reporting has fallen and we can better manage the fears of not proceeding correctly.” After the one in Perugia, the courses will continue until December in seven other cities: Como, Palermo, Turin, Potenza, Olbia, Savona and Florence. “We are proud to support this project since 2016 and we have set ourselves the goal of training 15,000 doctors, pediatricians and specialists,” declare Lucia Aleotti and Alberto Giovanni Aleotti, shareholders and members of the Menarini Board.
