Instead of four square meters of apple cake, as originally planned, Danny Steenhuyse will sell twelve square meters of cake on Sunday 25 June during the Hillekermis in Zwevezele. Good for no less than 2,000 portions of cake, which are sold for charity.
The day after the resurrected Hillrock metal festival, with Belgian Asociality and Aenima on the bill on Saturday, the three-day party on the Hille is concluded with a major stunt. Baker Danny Steenhuyse, who in the past lost both his brother and his baker’s guest to suicide, is going to bake cake for an (unofficial) record attempt, in order to support the Suicide Line. Specially for the record attempt, Danny even had a huge baking tin made of 1.5 meters by 2 meters. Also the size of his largest baker’s oven. But four square meters of cake will not suffice, as it now appears.

“We’re going to make three right away,” says Danny, who has just completed a successful trial. “Everywhere I go or stand, people talk to me enthusiastically about it, while a lot of orders have already been received via the website reuzenappelcake.be. So a lot of people will probably come and I don’t want to run the risk that we will be without on Sunday. So we’ll kick it up a notch soon. As a result, the amount of ingredients is also somewhat exaggerated. For three bins we will need 90 kilos of apples, 45 kilos of butter, 900 eggs, 70 kilos of flour and 30 kilos of sugar.”
The unveiling of the giant apple cake is scheduled for Sunday at 1 pm on the Hille in Zwevezele. Everyone is welcome. You can enjoy a piece of cake on site for 3 euros, although you can also buy a cake for four people for 10 euros on Sunday. All proceeds go to the Suicide Line.
