The number of people under electronic surveillance in Brazil, commonly known as anklets, reached 91,632 in 2022. The number grew especially between 2019 and 2020 due to a recommendation by the CNJ (National Council of Justice) to control the infection of inmates during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The use of devices continued to increase in the following years. Between 2020 and 2022, the growth was of at least 20 thousand more people per year monitored by the system. This is what emerges from the data of the 17th Brazilian Public Safety Yearbook published this Thursday (20).

In the publication, the Brazilian Public Security Forum concludes that its use and expansion are positive and are associated with the reduction of inmates in state cells, which concentrate most of the more than 832,000 people in prison units in Brazil (88.9%). Anklets, which currently reach 11.1% of the country’s inmates, including federal inmates, are part of the set of measures adopted within the framework of reducing incarceration in the country.
