The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees announced that “the number of refugees fleeing the war in Sudan to Libya has risen to 97,000 people.”

“Kufra is a major transit point for Sudanese refugees arriving in Libya and is under severe pressure, receiving around 350 Sudanese daily. Recent flooding has damaged essential local infrastructure, with some refugees forced to take temporary shelter in schools,” the commission said in a statement.

“In response to this crisis, UNHCR and its partners have scaled up their emergency relief operations in the east of the country, made possible in collaboration with the Libyan authorities who have facilitated access to affected areas, allowing UNHCR and its partners to deliver essential relief assistance to those in need,” she added.

He said Commission report, “Since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan, UNHCR has been able to reach more than 8,000 refugees in Kufra, providing them with essential assistance, including blankets, mattresses, plastic sheets and personal care kits. UNHCR has also equipped Kufra General Hospital with vital medical supplies, such as medicines, patient beds, wheelchairs and electrocardiogram machines, as well as essential antenatal care tools.”

“Women and children are paying the highest price in this crisis, and as we continue to witness a steady flow of refugees fleeing unimaginable conditions, we call on the international community to stand by the Sudanese refugees who are being generously hosted by countries in the region, and to support the response to their needs,” said UNHCR’s Head of Mission in Libya, Aseer Al-Mudhaei.

UNHCR is scaling up emergency relief assistance in Kufra, Libya, where some 97,000 Sudanese have sought safety since the crisis began in Sudan. Support is urgently needed to provide life-saving assistance.
